Skilled, Cost-effective Engineers

At the times of Soviet Union, Belarus had design bureaus and assembly lines for most of the Soviet electronics. The educational system was set up accordingly, and it is still there supplying the local software development industry with thousands of engineers every year. In Minsk alone, there is over a dozen of universities and colleges with Computer Science and Software Engineering majors; there are also six smaller cities with their own educational institutions. Costs of living and salaries in Belarus are lower than in neighbour countries of the European Union. In the same time, the standard of living is high enough. This balance leads to the higher percentage of engineers deciding to stay in the country instead of moving to the Western Europe or Northern America, compared to neighbour countries.

Proximity to the European Union

Belarus' timezone is close to or the same as in many other European countries (GMT+2) which is an important advantage for many businesses. The closest large city of the European Union is Vilnius, Lithuania which is located only about 170 km north-west off Minsk.
